Case study 001 was a visual essay investigating the unique transformation of Sydney’s Lower Oxford St strip and its dynamic cultural landscape during the respective eras of the Golden and Pink Mile. The purpose of the task was to establish a graphic profile, informed by aspects central to the heritage of the location for a contemporary audience. The ten-page excerpt features undertaken research of the sight and proposed concepts for a visual retelling of the space’s narrative.

New seam was a personal endeavour into alternate modes of upcycling by repurposing discarded packaging and textile materials nearing the end of their intended life cycle. However, the project transformed into a series of pieces that set out to challenge the notion of what determines the end of a product’s user cycle and furthermore explores the parameters with which we define an object as no longer suitable for usage. The three embroidered scenes are made from laminated paper labels and cotton thread, backed on muslin cloth offcuts. Designed, crafted and shot by me.

The Kintsugi cups are a small instalment that features a series of five paper clay vessels. The forms attempt to appropriate the Japanese concept of Kintsugi; highlighting imperfections through visual mends, intended to produce a stronger bond than the state of its prior breakage. I began investigating the use of different modes of mending, implementing unconventional pairings within the context of materiality. Particularly exploring interweaving cotton thread and geometric stitch patterns. Designed and crafted by me.

A series of postcards created in response to the Designer Passport Brief 2020. Each piece takes inspiration from imagery, line work and colour gradients from photographed scenes of various locations at the Australian Botanical Gardens. In coherence with the organic matter that inspired it, each postcard was hand crafted with natural dyes, inks and organically sourced up-cycled cotton thread.
